We Try It: Sweet Treats from The Cake Bake Shop at Disney’s Boardwalk

After a long, long wait the Cake Bake Shop at Disney’s Boardwalk Resort is finally open! We were lucky enough to stumble across their soft opening (story here) and did not hesitate to get in line for the bakery. The self-described fairy-tale cake shop did not disappoint. If the outside scene of a pristine white building with gold lettering, gold trim, sparkly glittering lights and personnel smartly dressed in white pants, pastel pink waistcoats, and gold ties didn’t clue you in to the opulent, fairytale vibe, then stepping into the building and being greeted by the view of crystal chandeliers, ornate crystal wall sconces, chic bakery cases filled with treats and topped with beautiful cakes under glass domes probably painted the picture. It was like walking into a dreamy cake castle. But enough about the ambience. How was the cake?

We had a hard time deciding what to get. We did know to try the Raspberry Champagne Cake slice since that was the most recommended item by everyone in the store. We also took another recommendation at the counter and got a slice of the Key Lime Pie. Mr. Jotter loves a Lemon Bar so we added one of those too. For drinks we went with the London Fog Latte and an iced Coconut Latte. The price of all of these including tax, but before tip, was around $72!! Yes, that’s not a typo. But was it worth it…

The Raspberry Champagne Cake slice ($22.99) was delicious. The menu describes it as “Three layers of fluffy vanilla cake brushed with a French champagne simple syrup, filled with our Raspberry Pixie Jam™ and fresh raspberries. Frosted with our champagne vanilla buttercream and topped with fresh raspberries.” We did not expect to like it as much as we did. The raspberries tasted ripe and sweet and paired so well with the vanilla cake and hints of champagne flavor from the syrup and frosting. That Swiss meringue buttercream was smooth, light and airy, and not too sweet. This was Mrs. Jotter’s ideal fairytale cake slice.

The Key Lime Pie ($14.99) was another winner! Described as “Full of fresh lime zest and freshly squeezed lime juice, our custard is filled into a crust of crushed graham crackers, European butter, and sugar. Topped with freshly whipped cream, lime zest, and fresh lime wedges.” This was not your typical Florida key lime pie. The person who recommended it said it was more of a mousse texture than a typical pie filling, and they were right. The pie was like eating Key Lime whipped cream, but in the best possible way. It was very soft and light in texture, and just surprising if you’re used to a denser custard pie base. You could see the bits of lime zest, but couldn’t really feel them as you ate this fluffy cloud of a pie. And despite the visual of a fresh lime wedge on top, the pie was not tart, just more smooth and sweet with creamy lime flavor. (We did not eat or use the lime wedge.) We would recommend this if you want a pleasantly, neat take on Key Lime Pie.

Now for the Lemon Bar ($13.99) described as “European all-butter shortbread crust topped with homemade lemon curd and dusted with confectioners’ sugar.” This was not a favorite of Mrs. Jotter, though she admits that she rarely chooses a lemon dessert or bar dessert. Mr. Jotter, who does love a good lemon bar, thought it was very sweet and rich, with a very strong lemon flavor and described it as “extra”. He enjoyed it. We would only recommend this to those who LOVE a strong and intense lemon bar.

How were the beverages? They were both good. The London Fog Latte ($8.99, Earl Grey tea with rose essence and honey, with steamed whole milk) had a good balance of flavors. Mr. Jotter enjoyed it, saying the honey flavor was strong with a noticeable undertone of rose in every sip. Mrs. Jotter chose the iced version of the Coconut Latte ($7.99, Illy espresso with coconut syrup, steamed coconut milk, and a rim of shaved coconut). This was a great non-dairy option and wasn’t very sweet. The coconut flavor was subtle even with a decent amount of coconut shavings added in. It was almost like an extra snack of coconut at the end of the drink. We will note that the gold-striped paper straw given did not hold up for long.

So was it all worth it for around $72? On a technical value-based scale, probably not. The prices are frankly outrageous for even very well-made bakery items, even when factoring in Disney prices. We heard many around us saying they would rather see the prices closer to those of Gideon’s Bakehouse in Disney Springs, which sells their comparably sized cake slices for $9.00. (Though in Mrs. Jotter’s opinion they are very DIFFERENT types of cakes with both the cakes and frosting of the Cake Bake Shop being much lighter, airier, and less sweet, than the much denser, sweeter cakes of Gideon’s. Both good, but very different.) Let’s face it. Most people don’t want to walk into a quick service bakery and drop upwards of $70 on some cake slices and coffee to go. And we’re most people. 😆 But will we go back for more? Yes, we will, though not too often. We enjoyed it and are curious about the other cake flavors and treats. We’ll also be back to try the restaurant side. Of course we’ll report back once we do.
