For as long as I’ve lived in Orlando, one Epcot restaurant has always been my go to eatery when visiting the park, the Yorkshire County Fish Shop in the UK pavilion. With its golden battered fish, and savory chips what’s not to like? I especially appreciated the variety of condiments that added flavor to my meals, from the acids like vinegar and lemon juice to the rich dips like mayo and tartar sauce. The menu may be small but the taste is as big as Spaceship Earth’s geodesic sphere.
Over the past couple of months, though, I’ve noticed some unwanted changes, and it’s not just the rise in prices. Disney has started removing many of the amenities. Guests used to be able to get any utensil they wanted, but now it’s only forks. Disney also made some changes to the condiment selection. The mustard was removed as an option and many of the sauces are now lower quality brands. As an added inconvenience, guests have to ask for tartar sauce at the counter instead of grabbing a packet or two at the condiment bar like it’s some secret only insiders are privy to.
The worst offender, though, is the shrinkflation. The fish has decreased in size, disguised by an increase in the batter thickness. The amount of chips on the plate has been slashed. Disney also removed the hand pies from the menu.
It’s not all bad, though. The fish and chips still have that same great taste, and they’ve added sugar packets allowing you to sweeten your tea. The cast members are as helpful and friendly as ever and the view from the dining area is one of the best. While the experience is not the same, it will still remain my go to place.
