We recently indulged in a delicious dessert at the Refreshment Outpost in the Africa Pavilion on Epcot’s World Showcase. This limited-time treat is available only during the International Food and Wine Festival at Epcot, which ends on November 23, 2024.
If you’ve dined at Boma at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, you might recognize the similarity to the famous Zebra Domes served at the Boma buffet. Both desserts feature a tasty Amarula filling encased in white chocolate and drizzled with dark chocolate. However, there are some key differences. The Zebra Domes are also covered in chocolate shavings and have a soft bottom, while this new offering has a chocolate core surrounded with amarula mousse and is served on a thin cookie base. You can also find packs of Zebra Domes at Jamari Treasures, but these come with chocolate sprinkles instead of shavings. Unfortunately, we couldn’t do a direct side-by-side comparison, so you’ll have to trust our memory on the details.
The distinctive flavor of both treats comes from Amarula, a cream liqueur from South Africa made with fruit from the marula tree. Locals call this tree the elephant tree because elephants travel many miles to feast on its fruits. It’s also known as the marriage tree in Zulu culture, as it’s believed to grant fertility to couples married under its branches.
Both the chocolate Amarula mousse and Zebra Domes are excellent treats that we highly recommend! While we could take or leave the cookie base that the mousse is served on, we ended up trying it without the base because, after cutting the treat in half and picking up one half to eat, the cookie base fell onto the ground. It was so much creamier and tastier without it, so we chalked it up as a happy accident.
If you’re visiting Epcot’s International Food and Wine Festival, don’t miss out on this delightful dessert at the Refreshment Outpost. Whether you’re a fan of the Zebra Domes at Boma or just looking to try something new, this treat is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. Enjoy the unique flavors of Amarula and the creamy texture of this dessert, and make sure to savor every bite!
