Disney World offers a variety of transportation options, and one of the most scenic ways to travel around the Epcot resort area is Disney’s Skyliner. While many find gliding through the air to be relaxing, it can be a bit of a thrill for those who aren’t fans of heights.
But what happens when the weather doesn’t cooperate? Do the gondolas sway in the wind? Does rain sneak in through the windows?
We unexpectedly ended up finding out… twice in the same day! The second time Disney stopped the ride with an emergency message, and then gave another message when the service resumed.
Typically, Disney shuts down the Skyliner if there’s lightning nearby or high winds. However, we recently found ourselves on the Skyliner during a sudden downpour. We heard thunder rumble in the distance, but luckily there was no lightning in sight.
Surprisingly, the experience wasn’t too bad. The gondola did rock a bit more than usual from the wind, but the Skyliner slowed down whenever the ride became too turbulent. This seemed to be a deliberate measure by Disney to ensure a smoother ride, and it worked because the cabin motion quickly subsided at slower speeds.
Rain did manage to blow in through the open windows, prompting us to joke about using our umbrellas inside the cabin (is that bad luck?). Fortunately, you can close the windows by pulling the handles inward. Even with the windows shut, a small stream of water dripped into the cabin at the edge of one of the windows. It was a minor inconvenience, and we simply moved to the center of the bench to stay dry.
Overall, riding the Skyliner during a rainstorm wasn’t too bad. The gondolas didn’t sway excessively, and the rain mostly stayed outside. If the weather gets too extreme, you may be asked to exit at the next station to wait it out or find alternate transportation. So, if you ever find yourself on the Skyliner in a downpour, rest assured—it’s all part of the adventure that you can safely ride out.
